Amateur Championship of the Ouze. Challenge Cup, and a silver medal, value sixteen guineas. Scullers in outriggers. Amateurs. About two miles.
First heat. Finche took the lead at starting, followed by Diver and Slater. Finche and Diver soon cleared the Londoner, and at 400 yards Diver drew level with Finche and shortly afterwards began to head him. Finche in his turn spurted, and Slater having settled to his work came up, and at half a mile they were all nearly as level as possible. Diver then came away and got half a length clear of Finche, both steering wildly, and at three quarters of a mile a foul occurred, which Finche claimed and the referee allowed, notwithstanding which Diver raced after Slater, who won easily.

This order was maintained for about a mile, when Shann put it on and raced up to the Corpus man; but Walker gamely answered spurt with spurt till the mile and a half had been covered, when regularly beaten by his own exertions and the ebbing tide he stopped and allowed Shann to go in and win.
