Charles Jackson, head gamekeeper at Sandringham

Charles Henry Jackson was born around 1836 at Hilborough in Norfolk. He was head gamekeeper at Sandringham from about 1870 to 1911. His first wife Hannah was a few years older and born at Rickinghall in Suffolk. They were living at The Kennels, West Newton at the time of the 1881 census.

Hannah died in 1904 and in 1906 Charles married Mrs Elizabeth Butler, who had been housekeeper at Sandringham for 21 years. Their marriage was a splendid affair, solemnised at Sandringham Parish Church by the Rev. F A S ffolkes, rector of Wolferton and domestic chaplain to their Majesties, assisted by the Rev. H C Staveley, curate at Sandringham. The bride wore a dress of Wedgwood blue cloth with toque to match and a white fox fur stole. She wore a pearl and diamond pendant, the gift of the Queen, and a white enamel and amethyst brooch, the gift of HRH Princess Victoria. She was given away by Mr F R Beck, the King’s estate agent. Mr J Walter Jones was the best man. The couple honeymooned in Bournemouth. Elizabeth retired that year and died two years later. Charles retired in 1911 and died on 14 September 1918.
